President’s Report:

Lemon Grove Café—“Meet the Reps”

For those of you who were not able to make it to the Lemon Grove Café for a “Meet the Reps” night out, you missed out! The event was a huge success with many in attendance. Thank you to all that attended!

P.S. We are going to plan another “Meet the Reps” event during the spring semester, so this will be an opportunity to get out and mingle with your fellow constituents if you weren’t able to make it to the last one!

Also, Student Government gives a BIG thank you to former Ohio State Senator Harry Meshel for his generous donation. Mr. Meshel, who currently serves on Youngstown State University’s Board of Trustees, was in attendance at the Lemon Grove Café. He enjoyed himself so much that he gave us a $25.00 donation to offset some of the costs for the spring “Meet the Reps!”

    1. What can we improve upon for next year?
      1. Possibly have corn hole or other activity. Maybe get SGA corn hole boards made.
      2. Some type of activity for children.

      4. 150 shirts next year instead of 130. Also, larger sizes!
      5. Hot chocolate was cold! Make sure it is hot next year!
      6. Possibly participate in the homecoming parade with a float or walk with the banner and pass out candy.

  5. Review of Meet the Reps Nights
    1. Attendance and Overall Quality
      1. Pre-Party attendance had almost 20 Reps. The attendance for the students was not that great, though.
      2. Lemon Grove attendance for the reps was not that bad but there were no students.
    2. Reps Meeting Students
      1. Reps did a good job at talking to students.
    3. Meet the reps night for spring semester – possibly doing it in Christman Dining Hall and include it in the Welcome Week events.

Academic Affairs Committee:

  • Guest Speaker: Joni Koneval on YSU 101
    1. The idea of a 101 course has been talked about since the ‘70s and hasn’t gotten anywhere. Two years ago this was an SGA campaign goal and Academic Affairs was charged with creating proposal.
    2. Their goal was merely an extended orientation (generic points and issues to be addressed)
      1. There was no academic grounding and this is what made it difficult for the proposal to succeed
      2. It was proactive and student-oriented, but didn’t consider who would teach the course; how it would it fit into students’ schedules, or where the funding would come from. In order for the proposal to be enacted we need to find the answers to these problems.
    3. It was listened to by Academic Senate in 2009 and didn’t go anywhere. A committee was supposed to look at it on Academic Senate but no action was taken because there were many other issues that took higher precedence.
    4. YSU 101 is currently at a standstill and needs further revisions in order for it to be successful therefore if our committee does continue to work on this we have extensive work ahead of us. Our goal is to keep this proposal on the table even if we are not able to complete our revisions.
  • Last Lecture Series Promotion and Preparations
    1. Fliers are to be posted by Thursday or Friday of this week to advertise for the November 16th lecture by Dr. Khawaja.

  1. The committee discussed a date on when we can have a meet and greet with kids who are disable.
    1. The date was determined to be on 11/17/10 in the afternoon

  1. The committee will meet with Michael Hrishenko
    1. This will be to update the committee on the project that was stopped

    1. The new version of Microsoft should be available for students sometime in spring of 2011

Wick-Pollock Garden Cleanup (4:27 – 4:32)

  1. Flyers distributed across campus
  2. YSU Personal announcement went out on Thursday 11/4/10
    1. Committee stressed about getting the word out and people joining the cleanup

  1. Student suggest that coffee stations should have sleeves for the coffee buyer
    1. Committee will find source that provides the coffee and contact the individuals
  2. Printer supply scam
    1. A printer distributer was contacting colleges at YSU and selling toner over the normal sale price
      1. All toner should come through the deans departments of each school
  3. Green Report
    1. Committee hopes to up the grade of the green report in the years to come
    2. Suggested more signs and flyers so students will not throw bottles away in the regular trash can
  4. Student Involvement
    1. Meet and greats with students in bridges and other colleges on campus to have more student involvement.
    2. Fun marketing idea with cartoons and SGA students on them
      1. Might help get a more response from students

What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: We have done a Hershey candy bar fundraiser that the members were responsible to sell individually.
There will be a couple restaurant benefit nights as well that will go toward the OCMEA general funds.

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is being planned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the
organization.: No service has been done yet this semester. We will be volunteering at the District V band festivals held at Stambaugh Auditorium. Approximately 10 people will participate. Also we will be doing a ”Instrument Petting Zoo” at local libraries and at a pre-school. Approximately 10 people will participate at that as well. Later in the year we will be volunteering at other OMEA events that ask us for help.

Description of Event: The Midwest Clinic is an annual conference held at the McCormick Place West in downtown Chicago, IL.

*Nationally recognized clinicians and performers

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: Information obtained throughout the conference is utilized in local chapter work.

Making Appropriations for one organization

Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the Youngstown State University Student Government Association assembled, That the following sums are appropriated, out of any money in the Appropriations Fund not otherwise appropriated, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, for the activities of student organizations, namely:

Section 1: Ohio Collegiate Music Educators Association is appropriated the sum of $700.00 defray the cost of attending the Midwest Clinic – An international band and orchestra conference in Chicago, Ill which 10 students will attend from December 15-18.
