What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: The students of NAMI ON CAMPUS has had one fund raiser which included selling candy bars to raise money in order to paint THE ROCK in front of Kilcawley to publicize this new YSU organization.

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is being planned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the organization.: Our organization participated in the local chapter of NAMI Christmas Party to help clients have a beautiful and meaningful holiday event. We served the clients dinner and helped with entertainment.

Description of Event: What the NAMI ON CAMPUS organization hopes for is to become a member of the National Roster of colleges and universities of NAMI ON CAMPUS. By doing this, we can access much support in terms of meetings, materials, and information to help students experiencing either emotional or mental difficulties. In order to accomplish this, we need to have 10 members join at $10.00 each. Since the year is up, it is too late to ask members to come up with this amount. Additionally, it is the belief of the executive board that the goal of this group is to not put any more stresses on the members than there already are. Therefore, we are asking SGA to help fund this lofty goal for the first year; from April 2010 to 2011.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: Being a part of the National Roster of NAMI ON CAMPUS will help give positive publicity to Youngstown State University by making a statement that this campus cares about ALL of its students and is willing to support this organization. Many people throughout United States are a part of NAMI ON CAMPUS and are aware of the high rates of suicides and other dangers that face students who are experiencing depression or other disorders. Having a National NAMI ON CAMPUS would speak volumes to the type of University of which we are members. The NAMI ON CAMPUS organization is open to everyone, even those who cannot pay dues as we do not ask for them. We have recently been in contact with YSU housing to have the Resident Assistants collaborating with NAMI Training specialists from NAMI OHIO so that if housing residents have a problem with emotional or mental issues, the RA’s will be equipped to help. We believe that the benefits of being on the National Roster will benefit the NAMI ON CAMPUS organization as well as the entire university.

What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: Each semester our club does a fundraiser. In the fall we sold pepperoni rolls and raised $260.63. This month we plan to sell Dunkin Donuts coffee, candles, and pepperoni rolls. We think it will be easier to raise more money if we offer a variety of fundraisers at the same time so that our members have choices to offer when they are trying to sell the items.

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is beingplanned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of theorganization.: We also do a community service project each semester. Last semester we had someone contact us and see if we could help them promote physical activity at local schools and day care centers. We sent out 3 or 4 students to 3 different locations and measured out and marked off one mile walking paths in the buildings. This semester, we are planning to volunteer at the special olympics. This will require some more planning that will take place at our next meeting.

Description of Event: AAHPERD is dedicated to the professional development of physical education and health education teachers, students, practitioners, researchers, and others who impact the lives of children and adults, and who promote an active and healthy lifestyle. The AAHPERD 2010 National Convention offers over 400 different sessions for guests to attend. They cover everything from best practices and experiential sessions, to research findings and current trends and issues in the field. Guests are free to choose to attend the sessions that will be of the most benefit to them.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: The students who attend this event will be able to bring back all of the information they learn at the convention and distribute this knowledge to their classmates, as well as other university professors. Also, the attendance of Youngstown State University students at a national convention will help advocate our physical education program and our university. Finally, a gathering of professionals from all over the country will provide countless networking opportunities for YSU.

Making appropriations for two organizations.

Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the Youngstown State University Student Government Association assembled, That the following sums are appropriated, out of any money in the Appropriations Fund not otherwise appropriated, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010, for the activities of student organizations, namely:

Section 1: NAMI on Campus is appropriated the sum of $100.00 in order to finance the cost of dues that are required to become a member of the National Roster of NAMI on Campus. Currently, fifteen members make up the Youngstown State University chapter of NAMI and the estimated date of membership to the National Roster is April of 2010,

Section 2: Physical Education Major’s Club is appropriated the sum of $440.00, providing the registration fee for their upcoming American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance National Convention in Indiana. The registration fee runs at $55.00 per student. Eight students are estimated to be attending this convention on the dates of March 17th– March 20th.
