        1. Still in progress on figuring out what day of the week each organization will help out on our United Way awareness week.  For now we know that SGA, RA’s, Greek Life, Athletics, and University Scholar’s will be involved.
    3. Foursquare
      1. Katherine Ellis suggested that our committee should invest time in creating a foursquare account instead of our initial idea, the Icebreakers.  Foursquare will help unify our students and YSU’s campus through its website and our smartphones. It allows students to check into locations on campus and create reviews as well.

III. Last Lecture Series

The last lecture series has been confirmed for Wednesday, November 30.  It will be held at 3:30 pm in the Ohio Room.  We want between 5 and 8 dozen cookies and lemonade and water for the guests.  We are anticipating between 60 and 100 guests.  We will create a facebook event and email the music organizations and professors to get the word out.

 

IV. Foundations of Excellence

FOE would not be able to be fully in place until after three different SGA administrations.  Whether or not we should continue is questionable and will be brought up to executive committee.

 

V. Academic Advising

University Affairs is compiling an ‘encyclopedia’ of academic advising.  They are starting with Beeghly College of Education and are considering an ad-hoc committee with Academic Affairs.

 

VI. Outstanding Professor Award/Student Award

We don’t want this to be an overlap with other awards on campus.  We want to send out a portal email with nominations that Academic Affairs would sort through and select the winners.  The winners would be announced at the end of the year award banquet.

YSU Portal System: 4:08 Talked with the administration, they also expressed concern with the amount of YSU emails being sent out on a daily basis. Now the UAC is attempting to come up with possible solutions, including one or two emails a day with all of the information contained in these emails.

 

Academic Advising: 4: 17 Looked at the college of Education advising sheets. These sheets are well organized and provide possible examples to work with. We will begin focusing on the college of Education website, to model a possible uniform style from them.

 

New Business

 

OSGA: 4: 25 YSU SGA not going to OSGA statewide meeting, the itinerary was not mailed out soon enough and executive committee did not feel comfortable trying to send people to Columbus with only a week notice.

 

WPNA: 4:28 Group homes need to be operated in a safe environment, under proper legal authority. Currently none in the Youngstown are following proper legal authority. “House of Hope” closed, which was licensed.

Description of Event: We are wishing to travel by auto to Chicago to attend the annual International Expositions of Sculptural Objects & Functional Art (a.k.a. SOFA). We also plan to attend various gallery and museum events that are coordinated during the SOFA event throughout the weekend.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: The students who participate in this trip will be exposed to some of the most influential contemporary international art. The students will also have the opportunity to meet and form professional relationships with the artists being represented. These interactions are not only influential on the growth of each student artist, but the connections created during this weekend can lead to professional opportunities in the field (i.e. internships, apprenticeships, graduate school opportunities, etc.)

What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: The way we have increased our organizations income has been to increase monthly dues. Our fundraising meeting is scheduled to be held on 10/18/11 to discuss ways to raise money not only for this event but for the spring semester event planning as well. We are still in the beginning stages of planning fundraising efforts. Last year, during spring, we raised a little bit of money by writing poems, love letters, postcards, and telegrams for admirers during Valentines day. We are still trying to capitalize on how to make the fall semester a big financial hit!

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is being planned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the organization.: We are working closely with the Warriros Inc. foundation, which is a Youngstown based community program that targets the mentorship of the youth. This year Warriors Inc. requested for us to participate not only in the mentorship programs, but also in the YSU concessions during different sporting events, which is a contribution to the university.

Description of Event: Class Act Open Mic will be a night where each class rank (Freshman, Sophmore, Junior, Senior) will have to a chance to showcase their artistic skills within multiple categories to determine which class is the best in a particular field i.e. dancing, poetry, singing, rapping. We are having sign-up tables in Kilcawley for everybody who is interested in participating in the open mic. There can only be four representatives per class competing for ”Youngstown State University’s Best….” Any other participants besides the four class representatives will be performing between the representative’s set as we try to ensure as many people who desire to perform the opportunity to do so. In closing, each class will have the chance to vote for their representatives ahead of time during one of our scheduled sign up table times.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: This event was planned to cater to the student body by involving each class and making everyone feel welcome to participate and compete for bragging rights in a friendly, fun filled environment.

What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: -Members of the Dana Guitar Association of YSU have gotten sponsorships from local businesses?-Members of the Dana Guitar Association of YSU conduct bake sales each semester on campus.?-The Dana Guitar Association of YSU raises money through a yearly raffle of a guitar (donated by a local music store).

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is being planned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the organization.: Several members of the Dana Guitar Association of YSU give free recitals in the community in venues such as schools, retirement facilities and nursing homes (i.e. Clare Bridge Assisted Living, Austintown and Park Vista, Fifth Avenue, Youngstown). This is done on a volunteer basis and usually involves guitar quartets, students preparing for campus recitals, and community outreach performances by the faculty advisor.

All active members of the DGA work to bring in guest artists to the YSU campus. It is part of the DGA’s mission to promote the arts in the greater Youngstown area. Several recent concerts include guest artist recitals by Thomas Viloteau (France), Marcin Dylla (Poland), Andrew Mah (Canada), Robert Gruca (USA), Stephen Aron (USA), and Gabriel Bianco (France). All of these concerts were free and open to the public.

Further, all active members of the DGA work to bring in guest artists to give masterclasses on the YSU campus. These classes and clinics are excellent educational opportunities for YSU students, and are also free and open to the public.

Name of Event: Duo Spiritoso Concert (internationally acclaimed guitar duo)?Date of Event: November 15, 2011?Location: Bliss Recital Hall, Dana School of Music, YSU?Expected Participation: 200?Total Cost of Event: $1450

Description of Event: Critically acclaimed classical guitar Duo Spiritoso will be giving a recital at YSU on November 15. The members of the duo consist of Dr. Andrew Zohn (USA) and Dr. Jeffrey McFadden (Canada). They are virtuoso guitarists, as well as faculty members at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and Columbus State University in Georgia. They will be presenting a masterclass for Dana School of Music guitar students. The concert and masterclass are free and open to all YSU students, faculty, and staff, as well as the general public.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: Bringing guest artists like Duo Spiritoso to YSU will expose YSU students and faculty to music they might not have heard before, performed by world class artists at a high level of musicianship and virtuosity. Their concert will feature music from around the world and will enrich YSU students’ cultural awareness. Concerts like these are a vital part of the performing arts community at YSU, and also in the greater Youngstown area. The event will be free and open to all YSU students, and the Dana Guitar Association encourages everyone to attend.

Guitar students at the Dana School of Music will also have the rare opportunity to play for Dr. Zohn and Dr. McFadden in a master class setting. These classes and clinics are excellent educational opportunities for YSU students, and are also free and open to the public.

Making Appropriations for three organization(s)

Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the Youngstown State University Student Government Association assembled, That the following sums are appropriated, out of any money in the Appropriations Fund not otherwise appropriated, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012, for the activities of student organizations, namely:

Section 1: Student Art Association is appropriated the sum of $336.00 to fully fund the cost of entry fees for their SOFA Chicago Trip on November 4-6th, 2011. This event will be held in Chicago, Illinois.  Twenty-eight (28) members are expected to attend.

Section 2: Premier Poets Guild is appropriated the sum of $400.00 to fully fund the cost of the live band for their Class Act Open Mic event which will be held on November 22nd, 2011. It will be held at The Hub in Kilcawley Center and one hundred and fifty (150) students are expected to attend.

Section 3: Dana Guitar Association of Youngstown State University is appropriated the sum of $1100.00 to fund the recital costs and travel expenses for their Duo Spiritoso Concert which will be held on November 15th, 2011 in Bliss Recital Hall.  Two Hundred (200) students are expected to attend
